Carlos Miyares
Carlos Manuel Miyares Hernández was born on April 25, 1980 in Santiago de Cuba. He began his music studies at the José María Heredia Vocational School of Art at the age of 7 in the piano specialty. He made four years and then changed to the saxophone, finishing the elementary level in 1994 with Master Raúl Cordies. He joined the Conservatory of Upper Middle Level Esteban Salas, graduating in 1999 with Master Julio Cesar Gonzales.
He made his first Tour with Chucho Valdés in August 2008, where he shared the stage with Legend Paquito D Rivera at the Jazz Festival in Marciac, France. He shared the stage with Legend Bebo Valdés in the Pleyel venue, Paris, with Chucho Valdés Band in November 2008.
He performs his first concert as Carlos Miyares Quartet, at the Kasematten Little Havana Festival, in the city of Graz, Austria in June 2009. He performs his second National Tour with the singer-songwriter Carlos Varela in the months of April and May 2009, performing at the Universities of the country. Participates with Carlos Varela in the Concert for Peace held in the Plaza de la Revolución, in Havana, in September 2009, where great artists such as Olga Tañon, Miguel Bose, Juanes, Juan Formell and the Van Van were, among others.
Performs the Ignaural Concert of the International Habano Fair, February 2010, with Chucho Valdés and Afrocuban Messengers, held at the Great Theater of Havana, accompanying the singers Ivan Lins and Marisa. Share the stage with Legend Archie Shepp at the Festival Jazz à la Villette, Paris, in September 2010, with Chucho Valdés and Afrocuban Messengers. Share the stage performing the Black Mass of Legend Chucho Valdés with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra directed by Wynton Marsalis, in October 2010, at the Mella Theater, Havana, with Chucho Valdés and Afrocuban Messengers. He recorded his first solo album entitled Chucho Valdés presents Carlos Miyares, on December 2-3 and 12, 2010, in study 1 of Abdala Studios, being Composer, Arranger and Musical Producer with Maestro Chucho Valdés. Nominated for the 2010 Grammy Awards for the best Latin Jazz album with the Chucho Steps album by Maestro Chucho Valdés and Afrocuban Messengers. Winner of the 2010 Grammy Awards for best Latin Jazz album with the album Chucho Steps.
Share the stage with Singer Concha Buika at Carnegie Hall, New York, with Chucho Valdés & Afrocuban Messengers, in January 2012. Nominated for the Cubadisco 2012 awards with the album Chucho Steps, by Maestro Chucho Valdés and Afrocuban Messengers, with the record label Colibrí. Winner of the 2012 Cubadisco Grand Prix with the album Chucho Steps, by Maestro Chucho Valdés and Afrocuban Messengers, with the Colibrí record label. He made his first National Tour with the Intercative Group in the month of February 2013, performing in the main theaters of the country. On March 14, 2013, he launched the CD Chucho Valdés presents Carlos Miyares at the Theater from the National Museum of Fine Arts, this being the first official presentation in Cuba of Carlos Miyares & The Cuban Quintet.
Nominated for the 2013 Cubadisco awards with the album Chucho Valdés presents Carlos Miyares, of the Bis Music label in the Cuban Jazz Category. Participated for the first time as Carlos Miyares & The Cuban Quintet at the closing of the 2013 Jazz Plaza Festival at the Mella Theater, sharing the stage with Maestro Bobby Carcasses.
On March 13, 2014 he made the first anniversary of Carlos Miyares & The Cuban Quintet at the Theater of the National Museum of Fine Arts.
On December 19, 2014, on the Tenth Anniversary of the Jazz Plaza International Colloquium, the Organizing Committee of the International Jazz Plaza Festival, recognizes Carlos Miyares for his contributions in the Irakere Groups, The Afrocuban Messengers and the Development of Jazz in Cuba.
On September 26, 2015, in the framework of the 500th Anniversary of the Foundation of Santiago de Cuba, in the 4th Edition of the Friends of Jazz Event, sponsored by UNEAC and its President Rodulfo Vaillant, Provincial Culture recognizes Carlos Miyares with the delivery of the Jose Maria Heredia and Heredia Recognition Board.
On April 30, 2017 he participates in the Concert for International Jazz Day, held in Havana, at the Alicia Alonso Grand Theater, sharing the stage with great Masters of the Genre.
On July 24, 2017, UNESCO recognizes Carlos Miyares for his contribution to the International Jazz Day Concert.
