Wayne Shorter
Wayne Shorter started music at 16. Choosing the tenor saxophone, he formed his first band, The Jazz Informes. Very active on the Newark scene, he moved to New York City and played in clubs such as Birdland and Cafe Bohemia.
At the end of the 1950s, he played with John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins but his career really took off when he joined Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in 1959. He became the Musical Director in 1963.
In 1970, he co-founded Weather Report with Joe Zawinul. He has been leading a solo career since 1986, exploring different forms of jazz. In 2003, he received a Grammy Award for his album Alegria.
