António Luis Ribeiro
Luis Ribeiro born in Caldas das Taipas, and started your´s music studies at the Banda Musical de Caldas das Taipas when he was 11 years old. In 1995 he joined the Conservatory of Music in Porto. Later he joined the Superior School of Music and Arts of the Spectacle of Porto, where he completed his degree in instrument / saxophone. He graduated in Saxophone, Postgraduate in Saxophone Pedagogy and Master in Music Teaching. He is a PhD student in performance at the University of Évora.
Luis Ribeiro was the first saxophonist won the 1st prize of the “Helena Sá e Costa Competition - 2004”, a competition held by the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectaculo do Porto. In 2014 recorded the CD Metamorfoses with the Czech pianist Ingrid Sotolarova, and in 2019 the CD Quasi Una Fantasia. He has already permormed as a soloist with numerous Portuguese and international bands and orchestras, in national and international rooms and has been regularly invited to give masterclasses in various high schools and university.
He has been invited to participate in colloquiums and conferences with performances and lecturer’s actions at international festivals and member of jury panels of national and international competitions. In 2012 he was invited to join the 35th International Saxophone Symposium, held in Washington, United States of America. In 2013 and 2015 he was co-organizer of the International Saxophone Festival SAXOPORTO13 and SAXOPORTO15, held at the Conservatório de Música do Porto. In 2015 he was present at the 17th World Saxophone Congress in Strasbourg, where he held three world premieres of works by Portuguese composers dedicated to him. As a founding member of the board of the Portuguese Saxophone Association, he was co-organizer of the EurSax17 (European Saxophone Congress), in the city of Porto. He also participated in the 18th World Saxophone Congress, held in Zagreb, Croatia.
He is artistic director of the Minho Saxophone Orchestra in which students from the UM Music Department and the International Saxophone Academy participate. This academy arises within the scope of the organization of masterclasses, conferences and colloquiums, articulated with various higher schools and universities worldwide, in order to create spaces for performance, research, research that allows UM's saxophone class students to have greater technical and scientific knowledge in their pre-professional training.
He worked at the Academia de Música Valentin Moreira de Sá - Guimarães, Conservatório de Música de Águeda, Companhia da Música - Braga and Conservatório de Música do Porto. By public concours, Luis is professor at Conservatório de Música Calouste Gulbenkian de Braga and also, he is a Professor Convidado Equiparado a Auxiliar at the Music Department of the Institute of Letters and Human Sciences of the University of Minho.
