Yo-yo Su

Dr. Yo-yo (Ningxin) Su is an award-winning Chinese-Australian saxophonist and educator with a dynamic international career. Equally at home as a soloist and chamber musician, he has captivated audiences across Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia.

He studied the saxophone and chamber music extensively across three continents, training at the VCASS (Australia), the Conservatories of Montpellier and Versailles (France), the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and the Netherlands String Quartet Academy (Netherlands). He later earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Iowa (USA), supported by the Iowa Performance Fellowship. His doctoral research focuses on the exploration of the Tubax contrabass saxophone’s expressive capabilities and establishing it as a solo instrument.

After more than a decade abroad studying and performing, he returned to Melbourne in 2023, dedicated to mentoring the next generation of saxophonists. Currently, he serves as an Associate Saxophone Teacher at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, University of Melbourne, and a Teaching Associate at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, Monash University. Additionally, he is an accredited examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board and co-founded the latest iteration of the Australian Saxophone Quartet, championing Australian music on the global stage.
