Hugo Diaz

From the start of his musical apprenticeship, Hugo Diaz developed a taste for varied musical aesthetics. This approach of stylistic openness, combined with the cultivation of his instrument, allowed him to envisage an atypical course of study.
The discovery of jazz and improvised music encouraged him to maintain an eclectic instrumental practice combining the demanding tradition of classical saxophone and the practice of improvisation.
This transversality now allows him to find a form of complementarity and a certain balance in the development of his artistic project.
Trained at the conservatoires of Montbéliard and Versailles, then at the Académie Supérieure de Musique in Strasbourg, he studied with great names in classical and jazz saxophone such as Vincent David, Philippe Geiss, Jean-Marc Larché, and Michael Alizon.
Like his course of study, his artistic practice reflects a certain versatility. He has had the opportunity to play with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg and the Orchestre Symphonique de Mulhouse.
Hugo holds a National Diploma in Professional Music and a double State Diploma in Classical and Jazz Saxophone.
Numerous influences now nourish his language and encourage him to develop a unique personality as a versatile artist and teacher.
In 2022, he formed a quartet with three musicians he met during his studies, with whom he has won numerous awards: the audience award at the European Jazz Springboard in Avignon 2023, first prize at the Un Doua de Jazz springboard 2023, winner of the Propulsion scheme 2023, winner of the Big Bang scheme 2023, finalist at the Rezzo Jazz springboards in Vienne 2024, Jazz en Ville - Vannes 2024, Nancy Jazz Up' 2024, second national prize at the Pulsations 2022 competition.
With a noteworthy debut on the French national jazz scene and his first album Confluences, released in spring 2024 (L'horizon Violet), he has now established himself as one of the emerging figures on the soprano saxophone scene.
Hugo Diaz plays the soprano and alto Mark VI saxophones.
