Tomasz Licak

Born in Poland, Tomasz Licak embarked on his musical journey at the age of 19, relocating to Denmark to immerse himself in a vibrant international music scene. His dedication to his craft led him to achieve a Master’s degree in Jazz Composition from the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense in 2012, and further refinement through the Advanced Postgraduate Program at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen in 2015. His academic pursuits culminated in a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk in 2023, marking a significant milestone in his artistic and educational career.
A recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Grand Prix at the Bielska Zadymka Jazzowa (2010) and the Jazz nad Odra Contest (2013), Tomasz is recognised for his distinctive voice in the jazz world. His individual achievements, such as the soloist prize at the Krokus Jazz Festival (2009), reflect his remarkable technical prowess and moving performances. As a member of the Danish Koda and Autor organisations, and an Honorable Ambassador of Szczecin, he has earned both local and international acclaim for his contributions to the jazz community.
Tomasz's music is a masterful blend of tradition and innovation, with deep roots in hard-bop and mainstream jazz, yet shaped by the expansive influences of Scandinavian jazz. His compositions and improvisational approach push the boundaries of contemporary jazz, infusing it with fresh, daring perspectives. His ensembles—such as Trouble Hunting, KRAN, and the Tomasz Licak/Artur Tuźnik Quintet—are evidence of his ability to synthesize diverse musical styles while preserving the integrity of jazz. Whether leading his own projects or performing as a sideman in groups like The Beat Freaks and Mad Ship, Tomasz's versatility shines through.
His latest big band album released to date, Seven Odes To The Past, The Present and You, is inspired by events, places and people related to Szczecin and is supported by Danish Composer's Union KODA and Danish Artists Union.
Beyond his career as a performer, Tomasz is a dedicated educator at The Academy of Art in Szczecin, where he co-founded and led the jazz performance program. He passionately mentors the next generation of musicians, nurturing their creativity and encouraging them to explore the infinite possibilities of jazz.
With unwavering curiosity and a deep love for music, Tomasz Licak continues to carve a unique path in the global jazz scene. His voice—both as a performer and composer—remains vital and influential, infusing the jazz tradition with contemporary sounds and ideas, and ensuring his place as a dynamic force in the world of music.
