Gerry Lopez
Gerry Lopez is a Mexican saxophonist and composer living in Europe since 2010. He is considered to be one of the most important young musicians of his generation (Jordi Batalle, Radio France International). Having graduated from the Conservatoire de Paris in 2012, Gerry Lopez was noticed for his discipline and assiduity. He then continued his studies at the Haute École de Musique in Lausanne (HEMU), Switzerland. He has won four international competitions that are 1st prize in the National Saxophone Competition of Mexico in 2009, 1st prize in the Pan-American Jazz Saxophone Competition in 2011, the Grand prize in the National Jazz Competition in France in 2012 and 1st prize in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés Competition in Paris in 2013. Gerry Lopez has held masterclasses and conferences at the Conservatoire Didier Lockwood in France, during the Panama Jazz Festival, at the Mexico City University, the Ciudad Juarez University, the Veracruz University, the Centre Culturel MJC in Rennes and in many other institutions.
Gerry Lopez is also founder of the National Jazz Orchestra of Mexico and has collaborated along with the orchestra as artistic director from 2014 to 2016. He holds a Master's degree in composition and arrangement, and has written music for symphonic orchestra, Big Band, string and saxophone quartet, and other ensembles. Gerry Lopez is one of the representatives of the cultural field of Mexico in Switzerland and has had the opportunity to represent his country in various festivals in Europe and in the world: International Jazz Festival of Montreux, of Copenhagen, Jazz Festival de la Défense (France), the Saint-German-des-Prés Jazz Festival (Paris, France), the Rocella Jazz Festival (Italy), the Panama Jazz Festival, the Jazz à l'Ouest Festival (Rennes, France) He has also given many concerts within the context of cultural exchanges in countries such as Russia, Spain, Croatia, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Morocco, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica, Guatemala and the United States.
Gerry Lopez is the first Mexican musician to be officially sponsored by Henri SELMER Paris. He currently has three records produced in his name: New Generation (2010), FRO TRIO (2012) (that received the title of "jazz revelation in France"), and Celebration released in 2015 and coming soon in 2019 The Sound of Frida.
